Ghoulish Bootleggers
Jadwiga and Jebediah Grigorivitch emigrated to the Appalachian hills of Pennsylvania in 1882, looking to escape some rather large debts owed to a local usurious Cossack. Jebediah worked in the mines digging coal. Jadwiga made whiskey in illegal stills in a wooden barn hidden deep in the woods. She trained a raven to warn her when anyone was approaching. Jadwiga also brewed up tinctures and potions for ailments and infirmities, some of which were more successful than others. She rarely charged anyone if their skin turned an unflattering shade of greyish-purple or a rash got worse.
On Friday and Saturday nights, Jadwiga ran a makeshift bar out of their living room, supplying the local farmers with whiskey shots in tea cups. The moonshine wasn’t half bad, at least when it didn’t cause hallucinations. The couple rarely mingled socially, but it was known that Jebediah may have accidentally shot out Jadwiga’s left eye and Jadwiga may have accidentally chopped off two of Jebediah’s fingers.
Printed on heavy art matte art paper in two sizes, 5 × 7 or 8 × 10 inches.
Ghoulish Relatives Portrait #2
(FYI, this is an ode to my great grandmother on my father’s side who ran an illegal bar, just in case you were wondering.)
